Mobilizing capital to improve outcomes for women and girls

Vision

A more equitable world for women and girls in Asia

Advancing gender equality in Asia-Pacific could mean an additional US$4.5 trillion or 12% of the collective annual GDP. The pandemic, however, has amplified pre-existing gender gaps. On its current trajectory, it will now take 135.6 years to close the gender gap worldwide.

Among the most promising gender-sensitive approaches have been measures that prioritise women’s labour market participation, and support for sectors with larger female representation. Nonetheless, such policies will not prove sufficient on their own accord. They must be matched to corporate and political governance structures to ensure accountability diversity, equity, and inclusivity.

Health & Safety

Increasing women’s access to quality healthcare will reduce maternal and newborn deaths by up to 70%. Addressing violence against women and girls could raise global GDP by 2%, equivalent to $1.5 trillion.

Education

When 10% more girls go to school, a country’s GDP increases on average by 3%. Women with secondary education can earn nearly two times more income than women with no education.

Economic Empowerment

Investing in women’s economic empowerment sets a direct path towards gender equality, increasing their right to economic resources, poverty eradication and inclusive economic growth. Addressing barriers in gender-based asset ownership will determine their bargaining power. For every dollar of funding, women-owned startups generated 78 cents, while male-founded startups generated less than half that — just 31 cents.

Livelihood

Up to 150 million fewer people would go hungry if women farmers had the same access to resources as men. Fully closing gender gaps in workplaces would add up to $28 trillion in global annual GDP by 2025.

Women in Leadership

Women are heavily underrepresented in leadership positions. Worldwide, slightly less than four women hold leadership positions for every ten men in business and politics. Increased female leadership leads to increased profitability, performance and productivity.

The Role of Teachers in Preventing School-Related Gender-Based Violence

12 July 2021

School-related gender-based violence (SRGBV) is a major obstacle to achieving gender equality. The education system provides opportunities for innovative, effective, and sustainable interventions to prevent violence against and between children, and for changes of attitudes and beliefs towards gender roles.
