Gigatonne: Addressing Problems within the Carbon Credits Market

We train and finance teams in the Global South to do abatement activities and impact their local communities. For every 6 carbon credits produced, teams need to impact 5 local families.

Problem

At Gigatonne, there are 2 main problems that we address within the carbon credits market:

On the demand side: Carbon markets as a form of financing climate action are immature. Cheap carbon credits (sub $100) are a form of greenwashing. They dont tackle the underlying problem of equity, or fairness. Nor do they meet science-based temporal targets for abatement. The verification bodies are nottransparent with the data on how much of the $100 do the recipients get. Cheap credits, mean cheap labour.

Supply side: teams are contracted to process 1 tonne of CO2e at $200, these team members live within and understand the context of the bottom 20% of the socio-economic bracket. They generally live on less than $20 per month. The teas are required to impact 1000 families within these communities by providing food security (sustainable farming)and energy security (biogas units).

It is clear that there is a pressing need to tackle the problems within the carbon credits market, and Gigatonne has the solution for this.

Solution

At Gigatonne, we operate across the entire supply chain.
  1. We train and employ local teams so prevent GHGs emission, each team abates between12000 - 120,000 tonnes of CO2e per year (COGS of $200 per credit).
  2. Our platform manages the team, data collection, reporting, verification and credit sales. Our platform has an open protocol to contract teams to directly reduce GHG emissions. Team’s performance data will be captured on the platform, we use AI-tool for verification reporting.
  3. We monetise by selling credits on the voluntary carbon market.
For more information on our solution, do refer to our Slide Deck.

Type of Carbon Reduced/Sequestered

CO2 (Carbon Dioxide), Methane, Nitrous Oxide

Amount of Carbon Dioxide Equivalent Avoided/Sequestered

This is contingent on us completing our fund raise of ~$5M to support 100 teams across the Gigatonne Protocols. By the end of 24 months, we plan to have avoided/ sequestered 66,000 tonnes of CO2e.

Means of Measurement

Our Open Reporting Platform captures activity level data. This is measured against established scientific baselines and abatement/sequestration is calculated from that baseline. The baseline is obtained from Gold Standard to ensure high integrity on both GHG measures as well as sustainable development.
