PadCare: Sanitary Pads Recycling in India using Patented 5D Technology

PadCare has developed the world’s first recycling technology for sanitary pads. We are present across 15 cities, impact 5,00,000 lives, recycle 20,00,000 pads and conserve 107+ MT.

Problem

Every year, 12 billion sanitary pads end up in the landfills of India. Owing to their plastic and SAP content, each one of these pads takes five centuries to decompose fully. Come to think of it that way, every sanitary pad ever manufactured on earth is still on earth.
  1. Vulnerable Women: Out of the 355 million menstruating women in India,52.8% change their absorbents in overused and unhygienic public toilets where they deal with disgust and are exposed to heightened risk of UTIs.
  2. Depleting Environment: 121 million Indian women choose sanitary pads over other absorbents. Each one of them generates up to 100 + pads of sanitary waste throughout the year, all of which end up in overfull urban landfills, where they take a minimum of 800 years to decompose.
  3. Unprotected Sanitation workers: Waste pickers collect sanitary waste from urban localities without any protective gear. 4 million+ waste pickers in the country struggle to lead their lives with basic dignity and insurance.

Solution

At PadCare, we provide menstrual hygiene management as a service. We do this by solving the problem of accessibility, awareness and recycling.
  1. PadCare has developed PadCare bin, a bin to dispose used sanitary pads and encourages source segregation, safe and hygienic disposal solutions. PadCare bins also prevents manual sorting of waste and dignified working conditions of waste workers. We provide collection services to collect the used pads from bins and take it to our centralized recycling station
  2. Our recycling technology converts pads into pulp and plastic. Pulp is used in the paper and packaging industry and plastic is used to make granules, which is reintroduced into the eco system.

Type of Carbon Reduced/Sequestered

CO2 (Carbon Dioxide)

Amount of Carbon Dioxide Equivalent Avoided/Sequestered

107 MT / Month

Means of Measurement

Our GHG emissions saved is calculated for the whole supply chain.
We recently did a third party LCA and understood that for every Kg of pads recycled, we conserve 2.41 Kg CO2 eq.
