Market of Implementation

  • India

Problem

Raichur district is regarded as a high critical area, with grim and shocking realities of malnutrition, high infant mortality rates and poor education parameters leading to the violation of children’s rights.

Malnutrition:

Raichur has the highest number of severely malnourished children in Karnataka with more than 3000 child deaths have been reported in past 3 years due to malnutrition. Poverty coupled with government apathy has resulted in mass deprivation with an alarming 60% infant malnutrition deaths reported in Koppal and Raichur districts.

Early Childhood Care & Development (ECCD):

Despite alarming figures concerning child development, there was a lack of appreciation for the need of age appropriate ECCD programs. Perception of Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) as a crucial and essential component of nutrition program within communities, parents, government officials did not receive due recognition. Commitment of government authorities concerning early childhood care and education (ECCE) is questionable.

Solution

  • As a strategic move, CRY has been instrumental in providing training workshops to Anganwadi teachers on essential skill sets for preschool teachers. Our objective is capacity building to create a sustainable impact in the community.
  • Setting up a door to door monitoring process to track malnourished children and providing appropriate intervention has helped us identify 8000+ malnourished children in the district. At a policy level, we mobilized the government authorities to set up bi-monthly nutrition health assessment camps and refer identified children to the Nutrition Rehabilitation Centers (NRCs) for receiving adequate medical treatment.
  • Strengthening the processes of the government systems and state machineries in efficient implementation of ICDS on children’s health, malnutrition and learning.
  • Public awareness and advocacy campaigns to sensitize parents towards a greater understanding of ECCD. CRY reached out to 15000 people, covering 3000 households through regular child rights awareness and advocacy drives.
